Westholme School recently hosted a delightful and inspiring event featuring bestselling author Adam Kay and his talented collaborator Henry Paker, a fellow comedian, writer, and cartoonist.
The creative duo visited the Pleasington school to promote their latest children's book, "Dexter Procter: The 10 Year Old Doctor” to pupils from Westholme and other local schools who had been invited to join the event in the school’s Croston Theatre.
Adam Kay, who first gained fame with his debut book "This is Going to Hurt," shared his humorous insights into medicine. His bestselling book was later adapted into a popular BBC TV series, garnering widespread acclaim.
Adam ventured into children’s literature with great success, releasing his first children's book, "Kay’s Anatomy” in 2020. His latest offering, "Dexter Procter", marks Adam's ninth literary work and his seventh collaboration with Henry Paker.
During the event, Adam captivated the young audience with sneak peeks of the book’s illustrations, leading them through the story with intrigue.
Meanwhile, Henry amazed the audience with his live drawings, filling the room with laughter as the children eagerly watched and interacted.
As a special treat, the duo invited children to participate in a draw-along session with Henry, giving them three scenes to choose from: Dexter reading, Dexter playing tennis, and the children’s top choice, Dexter being chased through the streets of NYC by a zombie. With enthusiasm, Henry guided everyone through drawing the chosen scene, making it an engaging and hilarious experience.
Following the drawing session, Adam took part in a lively Q&A, chatting and answering questions directly with the children while admiring their artwork. He also revealed that he is currently writing the sequel to "Dexter Procter," although details remain under wraps.
Each child left the event with a signed copy of the book, a cherished memento of the day. Westholme’s INSPIRED Sixth Form students expressed their gratitude by thanking Adam and Henry with a special gift, marking the end of a memorable visit that sparked creativity and fun for all involved.
Paul Taylor, Principal at Westholme School, said: “Adam and Henry’s visit brought great joy to our young audience who were captivated throughout.
“Their visit was made possible by our friends at Book, Bean and Ice Cream and we’re already looking forward to our next collaboration – a visit from astronaut Tim Peake next month.”
