High-flying student Julia Gartold has set her sights on becoming a Zoologist after being given an open offer to study Biology at Oxford University.
Julia’s love of science started in Year 7 at Westholme School after looking at a strand of her own hair under a microscope as part of an experiment. Since then, her love for the subject has grown with every lesson.
Julia, 17, from Blackburn, has received an open offer to the prestigious university and will find out later in the year whether she has been accepted. The course requires A*AA in her A-Levels.
She said: “With Biology, you have the chance to look at the intricacies of organisms and the way organisms are adapted to the environment in which they live. This has always piqued my interest in this subject, and I can’t wait to learn more.
“The high proportion of practical lessons at Westholme brings the textbook to life and the lessons are so much fun.”
Julia praised the DNA of Westholme School for its supportive, personalised environment when preparing her for the future.
She added: “I have been able to develop my interview skills through mock interviews with former Oxbridge students, Heads of Department, our Commercial Director Mrs Davenport and our Principal Dr Robson. Mr Oracz, the Head of Sixth Form, has also helped me so much.
“We have had interview preparation sessions in our PSHE lessons – which helped me prepare for the types of questions asked, and develop presentation and communication skills that would be required for a successful interview.”
Julia said extra-curricular activities such as drama club, netball, and choir, and learning Mandarin, have also helped to enhance her senior school and INSPIRED sixth form experience.
She added: “I’ve loved every second at Westholme School. Teachers go above and beyond to explain difficult concepts in an enjoyable way.”
Principal Dr Robson congratulated Julia on her offer.
He said: “Julia has been a model student and flourished at Westholme School in every way; always keen to try new activities, experience a variety of extra-curricular activities, Julia is the personification of our unrivalled holistic excellence.
“Westholme School prides itself on providing pupils with an all-round education, encouraging students to discover their own strengths, become the best version of themselves and develop future ambitions within a supportive and nurturing environment.
“I am sure that Julia has a very bright future ahead of her and that other pupils will be inspired by her amazing achievement.”
