Rowers from King’s Worcester have completed their annual charity challenge to row one million metres, raising an incredible £6,000 for Worcestershire Breast Unit Haven and smashing their fundraising target by £2,500.

The Boathouse team also set a time record time of 16 hours 39 minutes, beating the previous record by a remarkable 16 minutes.

The challenge, now in its tenth year, involved staff, pupils and former students coming together to power the indoor rowing machines over a phenomenal one million meters, the equivalent of six hundred and twenty miles, from Friday evening and through the night to Saturday morning.

This year, the challenge also saw participants ride over seven hundred thousand metres on indoor bikes, the combined total distance to Seville, where the upcoming Easter Senior Rowing Camp will be held.

Pupils from Lower Remove through to Upper Sixth were joined by OVs and staff, including Josh Hemming who joined pupils in rowing through the night. In a wonderful show of support, parents of our Sixth Form students provided meals on Friday evening, along with delicious snacks to power the rowers through the night, while Fifth Form parents provided a well-deserved breakfast on Saturday morning. Any leftover food was donated to Maggs Day Centre.

Boat Club Captains Amelia Venables (U6) and Jude Austin (U6) made the final push over the line, cheered on by fellow pupils, staff, OVs and parents from across the King’s community.

Alexandra Craigie, Worcestershire Breast Unit Haven Charity Director, said: “This is an absolutely phenomenal amount. The King’s rowers have done us proud with their efforts! We are the only breast cancer charity in Worcestershire and all our money is raised here in the community, so the support of students and their families and friends is particularly important. We love working with King’s Worcester, thank you to everybody involved.”

Donations to Worcestershire Breast Unit Haven can still be made through the team’s Just Giving page.
