Pupils at St Augustine’s Priory, a leading independent Catholic school for girls aged 2–18 with boys in the Nursery, have been recognised for their outstanding commitment to sustainability with the prestigious Eco-Schools Green Flag accreditation.
This internationally recognised award celebrates schools that make a real difference in protecting the environment and promoting eco-conscious behaviours across their communities.
Throughout the academic year, the Eco-Committee - led by Sustainability Lead Miss Lee - has worked tirelessly to engage their peers, staff, and the wider local community in a journey towards greater environmental responsibility. The pupils embraced the Eco-Schools’ seven-step framework to assess and improve their school’s environmental impact.
Their year-long Action Plan focused on three key areas: Litter, Waste, and Water. Initiatives included regular litter-picking events, installing new recycling stations around the school, and harvesting rainwater to care for the extensive school grounds. These practical, student-led actions have made a visible difference and nurtured a culture of sustainability that extends well beyond the classroom.
Headteacher Christine Macallister praised the students’ leadership and commitment:
“At St Augustine’s Priory, we believe in empowering our pupils to lead with purpose and integrity. The achievements of our Eco-Committee are a shining example of what young people can accomplish when they are given the tools and encouragement to drive change. We are incredibly proud of their initiative, teamwork, and the lasting impact they’ve made on our school and community.”
Miss Lee added:
“It has been a joy to watch the pupils take ownership of such an important cause. Their creativity and passion for the environment have inspired us all and made sustainability a core part of life at the school.”
Pupil Thea shared her pride in the award:
“I am so proud of our achievement! Having been part of the Eco-Committee and Eco-Club, I have loved learning about sustainability and how we all can make a difference to the world we live in, no matter how big or small.”
Adam Flint, Eco-Schools England Manager, also celebrated the school’s success:
“Every year, we are amazed by the incredible efforts of young people working together to create a better future for all. Their collective impact is truly remarkable. If everyone approached the climate crisis with the same level of passion and determination, we could resolve it much faster and make it a problem of the past. At Keep Britain Tidy, we are delighted to recognise their achievements with the Eco-Schools Green Flag.”
