Surbiton High School is excited to invite members of our local community to participate in a unique evening course as part of our Community Classrooms initiative. Titled A World History of Art in 50 Works: China & Japan, this 5-week course offers an in-depth exploration of key works of art from China and Japan, and will run for five weeks starting soon.
Following the success of the first series, which focused on Italy, this second series moves on to examine five iconic pieces of art, including the Terracotta Warriors, Hokusai’s Great Wave off Kanagawa, and Ai Weiwei’s Sunflower Seeds. The course will also delve into fascinating topics such as the afterlife in ancient China, Shinto Buddhism, the shogunate in feudal Japan, and Maoist propaganda during the Cultural Revolution.
The course has been designed to be accessible to all, with no prior knowledge required—just a passion for art and history. Participants will engage in a series of thought-provoking discussions, gaining insight into the cultural, historical, and artistic significance of these masterpieces.
The course will run over five weeks, with weekly sessions held at Surbiton High School. Space is limited, so interested individuals are encouraged to sign up early to secure their place here.
