Surbiton High School is delighted to announce that Mr Matthew Shoults has joined the School as Principal in January 2025.
Mr Shoults brings extensive leadership experience, having served as Headmaster of Notting Hill and Ealing High School for the past seven years. During his tenure, he led the 4 to 18 girls’ school (part of the Girls’ Day School Trust) to new heights, drawing on his expertise as a Head of Classics, Academic Deputy Head and Senior Deputy Head in prior roles. Beyond the classroom, Mr Shoults has actively contributed to co-curricular activities, including The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, cross-country running, music ensembles and residential trips.
A graduate of Worcester College, University of Oxford, where he studied Classics, Mr Shoults began his professional journey in the Civil Service Fast Stream before pursuing his PGCE at the University of Cambridge. His teaching career commenced in 2000, and he has since taught at some of the leading schools in the United Kingdom, including King’s College School Wimbledon and North London Collegiate School.
Mr Shoults shared his enthusiasm for the role, stating:
"I am compelled by Surbiton High School’s values, which celebrate individual achievement and place equal emphasis on success and happiness. During my visits to the School, I was deeply impressed by the passion and commitment of the teaching staff and the positivity of the pupils. The School’s vibrant community and dedication to excellence make this an extraordinary place to learn and grow."
He also spoke of his approach to leadership, noting:
"I believe in empowering teams, setting a clear vision, and leading by example. My focus will be on understanding the School community, listening to its members, and building on the remarkable foundation that already exists at Surbiton High School."
Outside of his professional life, Mr Shoults is an accomplished runner and hill walker, with aspirations to complete his final 12 Munros. He enjoys music, playing the violin and singing in ensembles, and is an avid cryptic crossword enthusiast. He is married to Sini, a professional violinist, and together they have a six-month-old daughter, Matilda.
Surbiton High School welcomes Mr Shoults this week and is excited about the vision and leadership he will bring to the School.
