WESTHOLME SCHOOL’s talented young sports stars were celebrated during the Pleasington school’s annual sports awards night at Ewood Park where students received trophies for their achievements.
Students from Year 7-11 and INSPIRED Sixth Form, along with their parents and Westholme staff, came together to enjoy an evening of entertainment, fine dining, speeches and trophy presentations, showcasing the variety of sporting achievements across the school year.
Awards were presented for Players’ Player of the Year and Coach’s Player of the Year in netball, football, and hockey, followed by Swimmer, Runner, and Athlete of the Year, as well as Player of the Year for rounders, cricket, and tennis.
Students who have represented Lancashire at county and national level were also recognised for their sporting excellence in hockey, football, tennis, equestrian, running and triathalon, swimming, archery, karting, golf, netball, rugby and dance.
Also amongst the recipients was Lancashire hockey player, Grace Berry, who was awarded three trophies on the night including Senior Girls’ Sports Personality of the year.
The Westholme Boys Team of the Year went to the 1st XI football team, captained by Joel Fletcher, with the Junior Girls’ Running Team scooping the prize for Westholme Girls’ Team of the Year.
Professional explorer, Louis Alexander, 24, was the guest speaker on the night and handed out the awards, following a rousing speech about his travel adventures.
Louis said: “It was an incredible evening - sharing stories and lessons from my adventures and having the privilege of handing out the awards to the inspiring students.
I have been fortunate to travel across all Seven Continents - climbing mountains, running through deserts and jungle, and swimming across shipping lanes - but events such as Westholme’s Sports Awards are a true testament of the power of sport. It truly has the ability to change our lives. I would like to congratulate all the award winners and wish them every success in the future!”
Other highlights from the evening included the chance for students to have their photo taken with the Premier League trophy upon arrival and the opportunity to spot themselves in a video of sporting moments throughout the year.
Sports Captains Charlie Moore, Eva Knowles, Oliver Waldron and Eadie Beswick also took to the stage during the event to talk about their experiences of throughout their time at Westholme.
Westholme’s Director of Sport, Lee Purdy, organised the event and said: “Our Sports Awards night is always a highlight in the Westholme calendar and is a great opportunity to come together and celebrate the achievements of our talented students.
“Their dedication, teamwork, and passion for sports mirrors the values we uphold at Westholme School, preparing them for success in all aspects of life, and I offer my congratulations and praise for their successes.”
