Westholme School pupils have cemented their place in history – by hiding a time capsule in the wall of their new preparatory school.
The time capsule provides a snapshot of life in 2021 with contents chosen by both children and staff from the independent school in Blackburn.
Two previous time capsules, buried in 1998 and 2003, were dug up from Billinge House before the school left the site as part of the redevelopment work. Artefacts from these were included in the new capsule to signify the single-site project.
The 2021 time capsule was inserted into a main corridor wall as construction continued on the new building, ahead of a planned opening in September 2022.
Items left for the pupils of the future include prefect, house captain, form and vice-captain badges, a school tie, photographs showing school life and a newspaper published on the day the capsule was hidden. There was also a face mask and Covid-19 risk assessment form, a mobile phone, flyers about the new prep school, a copy of the school prospectus and a copy of the Radio Times.
The ceremony included Principal Dr Richard Robson and Rebecca Barnett, Head of the Prep School, along with youngsters who will be attending the school permanently from September.
Pupils had chance to meet some of the construction crew and inspect the building work, which began in July.
Dr Robson said: “There were happy smiling faces from the students who were in attendance as they became part of their own history! It was an exciting adventure for all involved, and a landmark event in the building of our brand new prep school. We can’t wait for all Westholme students, aged four to 18, to be located on the same site by September 2022. We are well and truly looking forward to the future at Westholme School.”
