Two Derby Grammar School pupils are celebrating after a fantastic run in the County Cup. Sam and Mikeli, both in Year 7 at Derby Grammar School, represented Derbyshire’s U12 County Tennis team last weekend, meaning DGS pupils made up 50% of the squad!
The boys performed admirably, beating the teams from Staffordshire 6-0 and Shropshire 6-0. They were narrowly beaten in the final by a very strong Hereford & Worcestershire team 4-2. With the tennis season still underway, we look forward to following their success in the weeks ahead.
Mrs Walker, Head of Year 7 at Derby Grammar, explains, “We’re so proud of the boys. They are fantastic pupils in school, real shining examples of Derby Grammar. Their drive and determination with their studies is mirrored in their sporting ability.”
She continues, “We’re very lucky to be able to support a number of top-class athletes here at DGS. Having a flexible approach to allow them to attend regional and national training is important to see them thrive. Having had experience as an elite athlete playing football, I understand the commitment it takes to succeed, and I will look forward to watching all our young athletes progress.”
Sport is an integral part of school life at Derby Grammar School, with the boys experiencing a wide range of disciplines through the varied sports programme. The boys are encouraged to pursue their passions in all areas, with particular focus paid on improving core skills such as ball skills and reaction times which can be applied across a variety of top-level sports. Our sports lessons are taught at our bespoke sports facility, Rykneld Sports Centre.
