In April, pupils from Year 7 and 8 at The Royal School participated in the UKMT Junior Mathematics Challenge. This is a 1 hour paper with 25 questions that challenge the most able mathematicians to think in a logical and creative way in order to solve both abstract and applied mathematical problems.
Mrs Teresa Bowden, Head of Mathematics, said: “Well done to Rufus (Year 8) who received a Gold Certificate and who qualified for the Junior Mathematical Olympiad. The Junior Mathematical Olympiad is a follow-on round to the Junior Mathematical Challenge and is designed to stretch high-attaining young people. It is a two-hour competition consisting of 16 problems and is only open to the top 1,200 students (from 260,000) nationally.
In February, Rufus also sat the Intermediate Mathematics Challenge, a paper designed to stretch the more able pupils in Years 10 and 11. He was very successful in this challenge and due to his performance was invited to sit the next round of the challenge which is only for the top students, called the Grey Kangaroo.
We have just heard that he has received a Certificate of Merit for this, which is only awarded to the top 25% performing candidates. This is a fantastic result for someone so young! Huge congratulations to Rufus!”
