The WGS community are today celebrating a positive set of A-Level results which epitomise the sheer resilience and determination of the pupils.
The group receiving their results today have been the most heavily affected of all pupils in the aftermath of the pandemic. They had their first year of GCSE learning decimated at the outbreak, their GCSE exam year cancelled in aftermath and then had to sit one of the most challenging sets of public exams for the first time this year. Alongside announcements that results are set drop nationally to bring results in line with 2019, this cohort has had more than their fair share of challenges.
First Year Headmaster Barney Rimmer was naturally delighted when the results came through, although he was not surprised by how this particular group have dealt with everything that has been thrown their way. These results really highlight the special character and resilience that embodies a WGS pupil.
“With so much disruption to their learning over a critical period of their journey it would be easy to worry about how they might cope, not only sitting their first public exams, but also those exams being A-Levels.
We are incredibly proud of how they have applied themselves, studied diligently and embraced the opportunities they have had at WGS. I must also mention their support network comprising Tutors, Subject Teachers and Head of Section that have dedicated countless hours and energy to ensure the pupils have had all the support they could possibly need.
I am also delighted, once again, that so many of our pupils have achieved their primary goals for their future, whether that is their first choice university or other paths such as Degree Apprenticeships.
For those heading straight into the workplace, we are confident that the personal values and qualities that our pupils have developed will shine and we’re incredibly proud to be sending forward a cohort of reliable, hard-working, honest and team focused individuals.
We will continue to be available to support and follow their future outcomes with great interest as Old Grammarians. We look forward to welcoming them back to the School in the future, perhaps like Simon Prior and Matthew Clabon, as our Guests of Honour at our end of year Speech Day.”
