After an early start and packing the group equipment into their bags the teams set off on the minibuses to their respective starting points (Durlston Country Park or Langton Matravers). Upon their arrival the students familiarised themselves with their new surroundings. Each team was briefed by their team leader before departing at their set times of 10:00am and 10:30am.
The students were blessed with beautiful weather as they navigated their way along their 15-kilometre route on day 1. They used their knowledge and navigational skills to work their way along their route, meeting their supervisor or assessor along the way. The teams did exceptionally well and managed to stick to both their planned routes and timings. They carried out their group projects which ranged from photo diaries to flower collection and identification.
Arriving at the campsite, the teams set up their tents and were eager to get cooking after a long day’s walking. Each group successful prepared and cooked their pre-planned meals and should be congratulated on their campcraft skills. The assessors remarked on the student’s politeness and their care for one another throughout the day.
On day 2 the groups woke to another bright start as they taped up their blisters and hot spots for a hilly but shorter 12-kilometre route. Despite being tired, the groups remained in good spirits as they set out for another day’s walking. Having mastered their navigation, the teams had a little more time on day 2 for their project work and it was good to see them working together to fulfil this aspect of the expedition.
It was a fantastic weekend and the students were a credit to the school. We are all so proud of the effort and commitment that the students put into the expedition, and they too should be very proud of their accomplishments. I would like to thank all the Leweston staff for their support and for giving up their time over the weekend to ensure our DofE groups completed their expedition safely.
Well done to all the Bronze teams who took part, we now look forward to seeing you all on the Silver award next year!
