Surbiton High School is delighted to mark its 140th birthday today. The School opened its doors for the first time on 25 January 1884 with 11 girls being greeted by the first Head, Mary Amelia Bennett. The School’s humble beginnings were the result of a desire by the Church Schools Company to provide access to a superior education for girls along the guiding principles of the Church of England.
Surbiton High School has grown into one of the country’s leading independent schools, consistently delivering on its commitment to nurturing academic achievement and well-being. The School’s journey reflects a deep-rooted dedication to creating an environment where young minds can flourish.
Polly Rumbold, the Head of Development & Alumni Relations, and a former pupil herself of Surbiton High School, expressed enthusiasm about the significant milestone: “Our celebration of 140 years is a testament to the enduring legacy of Surbiton High School. We take pride in our rich history and the countless success stories that have emerged from our school.”
The School invited community members, alumni and current pupils to come together to share the history of the School, celebrate its achievements so far and look ahead to the future. Celebrations will continue throughout the year to mark this major milestone, including a whole-school photograph and a commemorative 140th ball.
