On Sunday, Mrs Ovey and Mr Ryan-East took an intrepid group of boarders to the Mendip Hills to embark on an unforgettable underground adventure! Led by Andy and Lawrence from CaveClimb, the group crawled, slid, scrambled and squeezed their way through a kilometre of boulder chambers and tight passages – always descending (before having to ascend again once they had reached the bottom!)
In this otherworldly environment of flowstone, stalactites and stalagmites, our students successfully negotiated the ‘Cracks of Doom’, the ‘Superman Squeeze’, the ominously named ‘Coffin Lid’ and 24 metres of the phreatic tube known aptly as the ‘Drainpipe’. Eventually, they emerged into the sunshine with smiles (and some Mendip mud) on their faces. Special mention goes to Vassily in Year 9 whose enthusiasm and skill in the cave caught the attention of the instructors who were very impressed with his positive attitude and natural aptitude for speleology.
